KEITH LIVINGSTON – PARTS THERAPY

There is integration for habits, conflicts and decisions.

If you have done any work with smoking cessation, weight loss or any other form of habit control, you will probably have a similar experience.

Everything goes great as far as you can tell after you reach a good level of trance. The client called you the next day and said they smoked after leaving your office.

Why did they smoke? Why did your suggestions not work?

Maybe you start to question the effectiveness of hypnotism. You say to yourself, Maybe I’m not good enough.

Many hypnotists are still teaching based on an old, authoritarian dogma. They will tell you that you didn’t have enough depth in your mind. They will tell you that you need to put more emotion into your suggestions. Their approach is to make the client accept your suggestions.

You are smarter than that. There has to be a better way.

Setting your client up to battle with themselves internally is the problem with simple, direct suggestion for smoking cessation, weight loss or other habits.

We suggest that a client stop smoking. The part of them that enjoys smoking or motivates them to eat is listening and saying, That doesn’t sound good to me. I will resist this suggestion.

You have part of the person behind you and part of the person resisting. What will happen next?

I would like to ask you this. Suppose you were involved in a negotiation. Is it better to label one of the parties as bad and suggest that it be gotten rid of? That is what you are doing if you are using simple, direct suggestion to break a habit.

While direct suggestion adds power to the side that wants to change the habit, there is still a battle in the back of the client’s mind. Will you be successful? Maybe, maybe not. Will the client be easy to change? Probably not. You will rarely be effective with this kind of client if you don’t get all the client’s motives on the same page.

A bank manager tells us about habits.

Several years ago, I had a conversation with my bank manager. We sat at his desk in the bank lobby. He wanted to know more about my practice. He looked across the desk with a shaky voice and asked, What is it you do exactly?

I asked Dan if he would move his arm with his mind. He looked at me and said yes. How about your leg? Do you have control over that? I thought Dan was a little sorry, but he played along. Yes.

I asked, Have you ever made up your mind to do something, maybe to start exercising or be more polite to people or eat better or stop smoking?

He had. Almost all of us have had the experience of deciding to start a new habit or stop one and then dropping the ball. Dan was exercising.

If your mind controls your arms, legs, and the rest of your body and you make up your mind to exercise, why didn’t you? I asked.

Dan didn’t have an answer to that question. He never thought of it that way. How can people make up their minds to do something but not do it? We have control of ourselves.

Some people have multiple motives at the same time.

Dan was told that human beings are not carved from a single block of stone. At a time, we may have more than one motivation. We may have to make a decision. We want to exercise but we also want to take it easy. We want to eat food that is good for us but we also want to have fun with it. We want to stop smoking, but we get something out of it.

I told Dan that I helped people get their conflicting motives lined up so that they could live longer. Getting all the resources of a client lined up and headed for the same goal is what parts therapy is all about.

When things were going well in your life, remember. You didn’t have to motivate yourself because progress was easy. Being fully congruent is the experience of all your inner motivation lined up towards one goal.

Instructions to align the inner motivations of your clients are now easy to follow. Powerful parts therapy has little known secrets.

Even the most stubborn habits can be blast away.
